How to Create Your Own Wild Flower Arrangements

Whether you’re oggling the beautiful blooms in your flower garden or the wild spectacles brightening up the woodlands and fields, you can bring the beauty indoors to a kitchen table near you by creating your own wild flower arrangements – or any flower arrangements. Some of the reasons I love wild flower arrangements specifically are because you can get seasonal gems highlighting your home and it also let’s you appreciate the flowers in your yard while gaining a piece of the wild beauty outside without taking away anything from your personal garden beds.

for Your Wild Flower Arrangements

  • A clean vase or container that complements the style and size of your flower arrangement
  • Floral foam or a flower frog (optional) to help hold the flowers in place, especially if you have a wide or shallow vase
  • Floral shears or a sharp pair of scissors
  • Water
  • Flower food

How to Pick Your Flowers

Be Aware of Your SUrroundings

Since we are on the hunt for wild flowers, I imagine you will be venturing forth into the wild. Depending on where you’re located, it’s good to be aware of the area you’re exploring. Is there poison ivy, snakes, spiders, drop offs? Keep in mind the possible dangers and watch where you’re walking. The flower might be the perfect piece to add to your arrangement, but it’s not worth getting hurt for and there are likely the same varieties growing around in a safer place.

Protective Gear

  • Because there are more dangers to be aware of, it’s important to dress accordingly. Wear long pants and close-toed shoes.
  • I will bring my phone with me to help identify flowers I’m not familiar with in case they might be poisonous and I will also bring gardening gloves just in case I’m touching something that could be sensitive to my skin.
  • It’s a lot easier to collect flowers all at once if you have a basket.
  • Bring a pair of gardening shears with you to make cutting the flower stems easier and cleaner for water absorption.

What Flowers Should You Pick?

Even though you are a little constrained based on the seasonal blooms available to you in your local, the most visually stunning wild flower arrangements have varying shapes, sizes, and colors. If you can keep that in mind while you’re choosing your flowers you will have an even more impressive display to showcase.

Colors

Consider where you will be displaying your arrangement. The color of the walls will affect the contrast as well as the style of the room. For example, flowers that are red, orange, and yellow will contrast well against my dining room’s teal walls because those colors are opposite on the color wheel. Our bedroom has more of a blue and white pallet with a country theme so I’d lean more into muted colors, whites, and blues.

Aside from considering the colors and style of your surroundings, you’ll want to consider how the colors of the flowers in the arrangement itself to make sure that they are monochromatic (all one color), complimentary (opposite colors on the color wheel), or a consistent color palette of a few colors.

Shapes + Sizes

You will want to have a focal flower which is larger and filler flowers that are smaller. Look for flowers that vary in shape and size and be conscious of how their colors will compliment their shapes and sizes.

Textures

Textures add variety and visual intrigue that breaks up the consistency of just flowers. The best way to do this is to add greenery and other natural elements – like grass (dried or green), leaves, pinecones, evergreen, ferns, eucalyptus, etc. This greenery will serve as filler pieces and will ultimately tie the whole arrangement together.

Prepare the Flowers

  • Fill a clean sink or basin with water.
  • Trim the stems of the flowers at a 45-degree angle under running water. This angle allows the flowers to absorb water more easily.
  • Remove any leaves or thorns that would be below the waterline in the vase. This helps keep the water clean and prevents bacterial growth.

Design Your Arrangement

Tips Before You Dive In

  • As you add each flower or stem, step back and evaluate the arrangement. Trim stems as needed to achieve the desired height and overall shape.
  • Vary the heights of the flowers and greenery to create visual interest. Shorter stems can be placed near the rim of the vase, while taller ones go toward the center.
  • Consider the color palette and balance the arrangement by distributing colors evenly.

Focal Flowers First

Choose a flower that will be the center of attention and place it in the center of the vase. This flower will determine the height and overall shape of the arrangement.

Filler Flowers Second

Place the filler flowers around the focal flowers, distributing them evenly to create a balanced look. These flowers add visual breaks to the arrangement with their different colors and sizes.

Add Greenery

Greenery also means brownery. This can be dried grasses, ferns, eucalyptus branches, etc. This will fill in the remainder to add volume and texture.
